Learning Environment Concern & Student Mistreatment Reporting
The 51 of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook Universityis committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for our students.Unprofessional behavior, mistreatment or violations of the school's values are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
With this in mind, there are multiple ways through which you can report concerns related to the learning environment. Please review your options below and select whichever option you feel most comfortable with.
- Email the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, David Cohen, MD, to request a meeting.Do not include any details of your concern in the body of your email.
- Share your concerns with one of the following Peer-to-Peer Groups:
- Gender-Based Mistreatment Group -The Gender-Based Mistreatment Committee at the 51 of Medicine (RSOM) consists of medical student representatives from each class, who serve as confidential resources for peers to report concerns related to gender-based mistreatment or inappropriate conduct. Committee members guide students through reporting options and, if requested, act as anonymous intermediaries when escalating concerns to the appropriate administrative channels.
- Learning Environment Concerns Committee -The Learning Environment Concerns Committee at the 51 of Medicine (RSOM) consists of medical student representatives from each class, who serve as confidential resources for peers to report concerns related to the clinical or academic learning environment. Committee members help guide students through available reporting options and can facilitate anonymous communication with administration.
- Diversity Students Ambassadors Group -The Diversity Student ambassadors are group of medical student leaders that can support their peers when dealing with issues. They provide support and confidentiality to students when deciding to what path is appropriate for addressing the student’s concern.
- Report during End of Phase Student Focus Groups.
- Log in to CBase and enteryour reportthrough the Learning Environment Concerns/Mistreatment tab selecting the Professionalism Note or Mistreatment Note sub tab.
- File your report through NAVEX EthicsPoint.(There are several ways you can do so,detailed on the next page.) This system operates outside the Stony Brook University system, assuring anonymity and providing an anonymous “Report Key” so that you can track the progress and resolution of your report.
Reports can be anonymous if desired.All reports anonymous or not are handled with discretion and sensitivity. RSOM strictly prohibits retaliation against anyone who reports a concern.
